Alex Martin Midterm Ref

I chose Howl's Moving Castle by Studio Ghibli

So far I've picked up on the fact that they seem to use very desaturated colors, and aside from the few night scenes everything seems to be relatively light usually more in the grey value range with fewer deep darks and bright lights. The mountainous environments around the castle almost have a watercolor feel to them for me.

I think I'd like to go with Studio 4ÂșC's Tekkonkinkreet...

I chose DreamWorks and the film Prince of Egypt.

Here is what i have in mind for my mid-term project. I would like to work similar style and i really like the colors they used for the short films. Thanks

I'm crazy about the animation in this short, and the backgrounds are really stylish:

Mid Term Project!

The assignment here is to choose a specific movie from an animation studio of your choice (Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue Sky, Ghibli, do your research, theres alot out there!) and create an environment from imagination that would fit into this specific IP. (Example: What does Beavis and Buttheads garage look like?) The important part here is to capture the shapes, the colors, and compositions used in this specific movie, because each film will absolutely use its own specific design. They make style guides for each animated film just to make sure everyone is on the same page! So the end result here should be an environment that looks like it fits right into this movie of your choice.

homework for thursday is to have your movie chosen, with 20 reference images from this movie. (hit up blockbuster if you have to!) Keep in mind well be focusing on the environment, so have that in mind when capturing screenshots.

Alex Martin Week 6 Color Piece

Here's my piece for Tuesday, if anyone has any crits I'll try and get them in before class tomorrow night.

Also Gino I was wondering if I could get your opinion on my piece for Don, I've already been told to bump up the saturation on most of the textures and to fill up the empty space on the left hand part of the sky and add more glow to the windows (which I'm going to repaint, and change out the window at door level into a door) and the lanterns

Bear in mind this is in 3D so adding new props while not impossible is a bit harder than 2D, but if it's a cool idea I'll try and work it in cause I've got another two weeks for this now

Michelle PO

Hey Michelle, I did a paintover to help address some of the issues i saw with your WIP. Most importantly it looks like there's not enough perspective block in happening before you jump into the painting. When I placed some grid lines over the scene, the roof of the building is at eye level even though it is below our horizon line, so we should definitely see more of the roof. The grid also showed that the castle structure wasn't sitting on the ground properly. Remember to always check your horizon line first thing!
Once i addressed those issues, the next thing is to make sure your scene is supporting the focal point, being the castle. Your values could use a bit more contrast around the important areas, but you also want to make sure your most detailed shapes and shape contrast stay in your focal point as well. In the bottom paintovers I took both images and broke them down into abstract shapes, more like what you would see if you squint at the image. Notice I tried to make sure there werent too many similar sized shapes in the scene, and tried to push the castle shapes so it demands the most attention. On the right side there's a lot of smaller shapes that don't help the scene and are a bit distracting, by increasing the size of the foreground mountain shapes, we can simplify that area, as well as create an angle back toward the focal point, keeping our eyes going where we want them to.
Hope this helps, let me know if there are any questions!

Week 6: Explorers (Split Complimentary)

I know I called it tertiary color scheme in class, but what i MEANT to say was split complimentary. SO, using a split complimentary color scheme (example above):

Thurs: 5 thumbnails, 5 color comps

Show a group of explorers / pioneers of some sort, exiting their vessel / mode of transportation for the first time, seeing the new strange world before them. Focus on finding a color scheme that best describes the mood you are going for.
